EVOLUTION OF THE SMART GLASSES

by Mark Little

It has been an absolute pleasure working with Dr. Stephen Hicks over the last two years on the hardware design of his "SMART Glasses" concept with the simple aim to improve functional vision for people with severely impaired sight.

Over 300,000 people in the UK are registered as blind. Dr Hicks and his team are developing a pair of smart-glasses that might be able to help people use their remaining vision to see and avoid obstacles and enjoy increased independence. Using computer vision and electronic components usually found in mobile phones, they are busy building and testing concepts that they hope to build into an affordable pair of glasses.

We have worked on 3 major versions of the glasses frames, using different types of displays and tracking technologies and have tried several different frame concepts. Each step getting closer to producing a commercial product.
